We’re Hiring a Farm Assistant

Farm Assistant
Job Overview:

Sisters of the Soil Community Farm is looking for a part-time Farm Assistant who is passionate about growing food for our vegetable farm in Upper Marlboro, MD. Candidates must be willing to work as independent contractors. Sisters of the Soil Community Farm is a Black women-owned, no-till farm that’s committed to holistic and regenerative practices that improve the health of the land, plants, and community. Our mission is to be a community resource for fresh and nutritious food, family support, and education.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Planting, cultivating, and harvesting vegetables, fruit, and herbs.
  • Assisting with irrigation and maintaining proper watering schedules.
  • Monitoring crops for signs of disease, pests, and other issues.
  • Operating and maintaining farm equipment, tools, and the irrigation system.
  • Weeding and performing general farm maintenance.
  • Sorting and packing harvested vegetables for sale.
  • Assisting with farmers’ market setup and sales.
  • Providing excellent and friendly customer service.
  • Following safety guidelines and protocols.

Job Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working in Agriculture (gardening or farming).
  • Knowledge of planting, cultivation, and harvesting techniques.
  • Physical stamina and the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Strong work ethic and a team player attitude.
  • Attention to detail for quality control.
  • Ability to work independently when needed.

Work Environment:

The work is performed mainly outdoors on the farm in different weather conditions. Must be able to perform physical labor including lifting and bending.

This Sunday we’ll be hosting volunteers on the farm. We’ve got a lot of preparations to do for incoming sweet potato slips. Please remember to bring comfortable clothing and shoes you don’t mind getting a little dirty. We’ll have water and fruit available, but you’re welcome to bring whatever will make you most comfortable.

Earth Day 2023

To celebrate Earth Day 2023 we’re hosting volunteers on the farm on Friday, April 21, 2023. Bring your water, gloves, and closed-toe shoes. Please come out and join us!
